Our WoW Woman Indre Butkeviciute is our resident ‘energy fairy’, helping women to stay on track and cultivate a healthy balanced lifestyle in an accessible, realistic and sustainable way. There’s possibly no better time to remind ourselves of this than at one of the busiest times of the year. So, with this in mind, Indre is sharing some of her top tips for staying on track throughout the Christmas season, staying healthy, happy and working toward your sustainable wellness goals.
Tip Number One: Routine
Try to keep the key elements of your routine going throughout the festive period; this might be your morning ritual & exercise and/or your winddown before bed, for example. Your routine is not only good for your body, especially if this includes your meals or movement, but for your mind too. Changes to our routines can disrupt our lives and mindsets in small ways without us realising, and letting our positive practices slip for a few weeks over Christmas means it will be that much harder to get going again! As always, it’s about doing what you can manage to make your wellbeing sustainable, but try to keep the key elements or, as much as you can, going!
Tip Number Two: Moderation
The festive period is notoriously a time of overindulgence and excess. This can appear as a real hurdle for those of us attempting to create a sustainable healthy lifestyle. It’s an age-old piece of advice but a golden one, everything in moderation. Indulge a little, enjoy your festivities and celebrations but remember your longer-term goals too. Be flexible but sensible, and you’ll be able to both enjoy and continue your journey to holistic wellbeing.
Tip Number Three: Switch Off Time
Look after your mind. The festive period can be a lot to manage, whether or not you’re meeting hoards of family and friends or have a relatively quiet time planned, there’s always more going on than usual, and we’re subjected to many more external pressures too. The media bombarding us to buy more, the shops, the supermarkets are packed and bustling, more lights, more noise, more… everything. We need to remember to switch ourselves off regularly, to step away from the ‘noise’. If you can, consciously allocate time to do this.
Tip Number Four: Prioritise
It’s a busy time of year, but we can’t always do it all, and that’s ok. If we need to let some healthy routines or changes slip, that’s ok; if we need to let some commitments go to make space, that’s ok. Just prioritise, what are your non-negotiables, what do you feel it’s essential to keep in your routine and your calendar?
Forget New Year, New You!
The new year can be a time of new beginnings. However, one of the biggest mistakes and most unhelpful things we can do is maintain the ‘New Year, New You’ mindset. This puts pressure on ourselves to change, essentially overnight. Our changes, to be sustainable, need to be small, buildable and consistent. Begin now, or in the new year, but avoid allocating yourself a specific time to click your fingers and expect change; you’re setting an unrealistic expectation.
The festive period is a time, for those able to take time away from work and usual responsibilities, for relaxation & enjoying time with loved ones. From WoW and Indre, we hope you can take time for yourself this year, both enjoying festivities and continuing to look after yourself.
